In this course, you will learn about four important elements that, together, can help you create a meaningful life. They are:
- Self-Determination
- Family Supports
- Community Living
- Assistive Technology
Other important aspects, like employment and education, are covered in separate courses. You can learn more about them at www.partnersinpolicymaking.com/online.
In The Freedom to Choose module, you will learn about the history of personal choice, life planning and self-determination for people with developmental disabilities.
In the Family Supports module, you will learn about family support and how it has changed over the years. You'll also learn about the financial, physical and emotional resources that can help your family stay together.
In the Community Living module, you will explore the many options available today to help people with developmental disabilities live independently in the community and participate in community life to the fullest.
Finally, in the Assistive Technology module, you will investigate how technology is changing the way people with developmental disabilities live, work and play.
You will explore each topic from several different angles. Interactive games, quizzes, final exams, and outside assignments are scattered throughout the course to help you examine topics in more depth, reinforce what you've learned and test your understanding of key information. Be sure to check out the Tips and Tools included in each module.
As in other Partners in Policymaking® courses, you can learn from the experiences of Partners in Policymaking® graduates who have put their training to work to change their lives and their communities. In this course, we'll be following the life journey of Aaron Westendorp as Aaron enters adulthood and his response to the many choices and opportunities life offers. Check out the first installment of Aaron's Story.
