What is a Job?

"Opportunity is missed by most people because it's dressed in overalls and looks like work." - Thomas A. Edison

Before you can start your job search, it's important to understand the world of work and what's happening in employment in general and employment of people with disabilities in particular.

Basically, a "job" is created when a business needs a specific task completed and is willing to pay someone else to do it. Sometimes, an employer thinks of several things that one person could do. These responsibilities form a job and the person who performs them becomes an employee.

The economy plays an important part in how many jobs are available at any given time. In times of slow growth, some employers may cut jobs which means that more workers are competing for fewer job openings. This doesn't mean, however, that there are no jobs - it simply means that the competition for meaningful work is tougher.

Today, most people seek a career - not just a job. A career is a series of jobs that offer new skills and new experiences that bring a person closer to fulfilling their dreams. An important difference between a job and a career is that a career is planned.

All human beings want to work. It's what we do. However, work and the way people approach it has changed dramatically over the years.
